The difference between vertical machining center and carving and milling machine and their respective characteristics

Date:2025-01-23    Click:1023

Simply put, vertical machining centers and engraving and milling machines are essentially milling type CNC machining equipment. They are completely different in terms of processing capability and usage scenarios. The vertical machining center is equipped with a tool magazine and an automatic tool changing device, which not only has milling processing capabilities, but also has the ability to perform various composite processing such as drilling, boring, reaming, and tapping. And besides milling, carving and milling machines can only perform carving processing, unlike the former which is as powerful. Specifically, we can discuss their respective processing characteristics:

1. Characteristics of Vertical Machining Centers
Simply put, a vertical machining center is a highly automated multifunctional CNC machine tool with a tool magazine and automatic tool changing device. It is developed on the basis of CNC boring and milling machines. Mainly suitable for processing complex workpieces such as plates, discs, molds, and shells. The biggest processing feature is that multiple processes such as drilling, milling, boring, reaming, and tapping of the workpiece can be centrally processed through the tool magazine and automatic tool changing device in one clamping of the workpiece.

2. Characteristics of carving and milling machine
Simply put, carving and milling machines are developed based on carving machines. In order to achieve the ability of milling machining, the spindle diameter of the engraving machine has been thickened, the power of the servo motor has been increased, and the bearing capacity of the bed has been increased, while maintaining the high speed of the spindle, making it capable of engraving and milling machining.
In addition to their essential differences in processing capabilities, the two also have essential differences in mechanical structure, usage scenarios, volume structure, and machine tool configuration.

1. Comparing from a mechanical structure perspective
Vertical machining centers generally adopt a bed type structure and are cast as a whole. The machine head moves up and down on a herringbone column through a sliding plate, and the worktable often adopts a cross slide mechanism. The spindle speed is generally between 8000r/min-15000r/min, and the spindle rigidity is high. It can not only perform precision machining of workpieces but also rough machining;
Carving and milling machines generally adopt a gantry structure, and the body is mostly welded from steel plates, resulting in poor overall rigidity. The spindle speed is generally between 24000r/min and 30000r/min, and due to the poor rigidity of the machine body and spindle, only small feed rate precision machining can be carried out;

2. Comparing from the perspective of application scenarios
Vertical machining centers have high spindle rigidity due to their integral casting of the body. Suitable for processing workpieces or molds with large milling volumes, and can also perform rough or fine machining on large molds and materials with high hardness; The carving and milling machine is made of welded steel plates as a whole, and due to the poor rigidity of the spindle, it can only perform precision machining with small milling amounts. It is suitable for processing low hardness plates such as copper, graphite, wood, two-color boards, acrylic boards, etc.
